The double tap can often be associated with the social networking site Instagram as it is the action you have to perform to “like” a photo or a video.
Last Saturday, however, Batangueños present at The Hive (formerly known as Euphoria Bar and Resto) had the chance watch a show called Double Tap organized by Karibok Collective.
Karibok Collective is a performing arts group that are comprised of local talented youth and last Saturday night’s show was unlike any other usual spoken word poetry/monologues show. The artists’ pieces were both extremely relevant and beautifully made.
They spoke of issues currently faced by not only the Filipino society but by the world as well. Substance abuse, body-shaming, rape culture, victim-blaming, cyberbullying, conforming to societal norms, extrajudicial killings, rampant crimes, and every germane issue we currently face were addressed in such powerful language… the TRUTH.
The artists used unfiltered and unadulterated words and raw emotions to get all their points across. The audience who came in for the show left the premises with minds opened wider, hearts which beat louder, and souls surprisingly satisfied.
Poetry is an art form which perhaps not everyone understands logically, especially when highfalutin words are used, nevertheless, the point of poetry is to create an emotional response through its meaning, sound, or rhythm; and with everything happening in the world right now, with every fake news spread, every rude and degrading comment made, every harassing video or photo posted and made fun of, all the hypocrites engaging in mindless talk, and with all the lives ruined by the judgmental and unforgiving society where we revolve in, we all need the truth served cold and fresh from the mouths of people who were able to see from their naked eye… the dark and ugly enigma that is our society.
Karibok Collective’s Double Tap spoken word poetry show runs every Saturday from June 17 to July 1, 2017, at The Hive (formerly Euphoria Bar and Resto) in front of SM City Batangas.
